Background of the Study
Religious pilgrimage has long been regarded as a transformative experience, often associated with spiritual renewal and psychological benefits. In Ile-Ife Local Government Area, Osun State, many adherents embark on pilgrimages that provide them with a sense of purpose, community, and emotional relief (Oluwole, 2023). These journeys are not only spiritual quests but also serve as a means of coping with life’s stresses and psychological burdens (Ajayi, 2024). Contemporary studies have demonstrated that pilgrimage experiences can reduce anxiety, foster resilience, and enhance overall mental well-being (Oke, 2025). The ritualistic and communal aspects of these journeys create a supportive environment that encourages introspection and emotional healing. This research examines the psychological benefits derived from religious pilgrimage, considering both individual experiences and communal influences. It further explores how these benefits interact with broader socio-cultural contexts, offering insights into the role of faith in mental health promotion (Balogun, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although religious pilgrimage is widely believed to yield psychological benefits, there is a paucity of empirical evidence documenting these effects among adherents in Ile-Ife. Many pilgrims report subjective improvements in well-being; however, systematic evaluations remain scarce (Folarin, 2024). This gap in the literature raises questions about the measurable impact of pilgrimage on mental health. The study seeks to address these ambiguities by assessing both the positive outcomes and potential challenges associated with pilgrimage experiences in enhancing psychological well-being (Adeyemi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the psychological benefits associated with religious pilgrimage.

  2. To explore the role of communal practices in enhancing mental well-being during pilgrimage.

  3. To provide recommendations for integrating pilgrimage experiences with mental health interventions.

Research Questions:

  1. What psychological benefits do pilgrims experience in Ile-Ife?

  2. How does communal participation during pilgrimage influence mental health?

  3. What challenges may limit the psychological benefits of pilgrimage?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Religious pilgrimage significantly improves psychological well-being.

  2. Community participation enhances the mental health benefits of pilgrimage.

  3. There is a positive correlation between pilgrimage frequency and emotional resilience.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a systematic evaluation of the psychological benefits of religious pilgrimage, providing valuable insights for mental health practitioners and religious organizations. The findings will contribute to understanding how faith-based practices can be integrated into mental health promotion strategies in culturally rich environments (Adetokunbo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the psychological benefits of religious pilgrimage among adherents in Ile-Ife Local Government Area, Osun State, excluding other religious practices or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Religious Pilgrimage: A journey to a sacred site undertaken for spiritual purposes.

  • Psychological Benefits: Positive mental and emotional outcomes resulting from experiences.

  • Adherents: Individuals who follow a particular religious faith.
